Ridiculous thread.

You can't have a successful career as a Prem footballer unless you're a brilliant footballer.

Okay, you may come up short against other brilliant footballers but that's the same in any sport.

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
I’m with Alfs - there are levels and levels and pulling on a PL shirt isn’t an accident.

Growing up one of my best mates was at Spurs and got 2 years pro and when he went up and trained with the reserves he said the leveks were ridiculous and then the first team different again.

I played against Souness’s Blackburn side pre season in the late 90’s and couldn’t get near them. Since played with quite a few ex pros and the difference between them and good semi pro players is miles apart. The first touch, the reading of the game, the ability to do things quickly is just on another level.

Even players like Soucek who can look slow and technically awful, you would be astounded by if you played against them or with them.

So although there are levels again within the PL you generally don’t get to wear a shirt unless you have bags of takent and are ultra fit.

I doubt if anyone has watched Ayew and laughed out loud.

Agreed, each of these players have earned the right to be there and play at the highest level.

Good post and some good comments.

The percentage of players that make it to the top level is tiny. That's why I do tend to agree with posters on here that say all PL players are absolutely brilliant footballers. Just that some are more brilliant than others.

Like others I have watched a lot of football down the years and I must say i have asked myself that question. There are some players that I just have never ever understood how they made it.

I suppose there's more to it than just being a brilliant footballer. Top level football is ridiculously physical and the demands on the body can be damaging. So there are players out there that can demonstrate that they can take the physical demands, never get injured, play every game, perform around 6 or 7 out of 10 every game, train hard, do their job, ultimate professional, don't booze, don't eat shit and are generally decent people.

All of that goes a long way. And some players make decent careers out of all the above without standing out as a brilliant footballer.

Roberto.

He played for Athletico Madrid, Spain U21. Obviously at some point he had a pair of hands.

However, concentrating solely on the Premier League as per the thread, I have never seen such incompetence in any player, ever. He was so unbelievably shit, I actually started laughing in the end whenever he threw the ball into our net. Conceding a corner was as nervy as conceding a penalty.

Without a shadow of doubt, the worst ever to pull on the West Ham shirt. Or any shirt in the PL, and I include George Weah's fake cousin in that, at least he had an excuse.

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
There must be some extra qualities that make top sports people. In music you get these incredible talents that just don't have the work ethic or commitment and don't make it to the the top. I assume there is something similar in football. Its not just talent and technique.

Looking at Chelsea on Sunday amazed me. This team could run and pass all day long but once they got near the goal they hardly ever looked like scoring. Or, unlocking our defensive play. I admit that is partly tactics but such an expensive team should in theory be able to score goals?

So, its a team and to play in a team you need very strong team ethics and those who are good at that might rise above pure talent. That said some people just lose the plot.

Erling Haaland

Can't take a player on. Hardly touches the ball all game - something like 25 touches on average. Just lumbers about like looking like he should be in 'white chick'.

What does he bring to the team?

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
You have to have certain assets and abilities to play at the top level and also in some cases a fair slice of good fortune.
Pace is a great asset in the modern game but you also need to have the ability to play a bit too
Having said that it amazes me when I see wide players who can't seem to be able to cross a ball, centre forwards who cant trap a bag of cement midfielders who cant find a teammate from 5 yards and goalkeepers who cant effectively deal with a high ball into the box.
I think we may of all played with or known mates who seemingly had the ability to play pro football but for various different reasons didn't make it
A fella I played with at 15/16 had the likes of Gavin Maguire (ex Portsmouth and QPR) on toast on the occasions we played against his side and others who went on to have good pro careers too,he had great feet and balance but lacked a bit in stature which he reckons went against him when scouted and given trials.
Geoff Thomas is one name that stands out as a player with limited ability that went on to play at the top level and for me he
was not even in the same league as a Martin Allan.

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
Funny one, Haaland.

Obviously an outstanding goalscorer. Big games for Man City last season?

CL semi-final 2 legs: 0 goals
CL final: 0 goals
FA Cup semi-final: 0 goals
FA Cup Final: 0 goals
3 games vs Liverpool: 0 goals
Also worth noting he didn't score against Chelsea, or Man Utd away.

This season, 0 goals in Community Shield & Super Cup.

He has scored an absolute barrel load in all other games though. Just something worth keeping an eye on this season.

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
It's all about drive and determination as well. We have all read a football book where the author always says that there were players better than them at school or in the youth team but it was never 100% football for those people and they drifted away from the game. I guess you could point to the classic Harry Redknapp You Tube clip where he argues with a fan over Frank Lampard Jnr and Scott Canham. Love him or loathe him FLJ made his career what is was with the work ethic, drive and determination on top of the talent that he had.

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
I remember seeing or hearing once it was said that every top level player loves football, ie if you don't love football you just won't make it, even if you are possibly good enough to. When you was a kid did you want to play saturday afternoon and sunday morning, go training most nights after school, or do other things too?

Re: How are they Premier League Players ?
Despite most answers on here indicating all prem players are there for a reason, I give it until 1740 on Saturday for multiple people to start saying half our players are pub level rather than premier league.
